5 Card Poker Strategies

General Poker

5 Card Poker Tip One – Position

In 5 card draw, being in a late position is a major advantage. Being exactly last to act is the very best. In this position, you would be able to see what every one has done as far as betting before the draw. You will also be able to watch how many cards each player has taken on the draw before you have to decide whether to continue with your hand or not. Make sure you pay attention and use all the information you have available.

5 Card Poker – Deception

You have to be deceptive when playing 5 card draw. Probably more than any other poker variation. You have to vary your play and drawing tendencies so that no one can get a good read on what you have. For example if you are dealt a pair, don't draw three cards every time, stand pat occassionaly on a strong two pair and throw in a bluff from time to time. If the pot is small enough, losing a few of these hands and showing can only further your image at the table.

5 Card Poker – Pat Hands

If you are lucky enough to be given a "pat hand", which is a hand you do not need to draw to improve, you should play it very aggressively. You need to build as much into the pot as possible before the draw. Once you "stand pat" and indicate you do not need any more cards, it is highly unlikely you will get any play after the draw.
